{"id":312,"date":"2019-03-22T05:00:49","date_gmt":"2019-03-22T10:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/crosslabyrinth.com\/JourneyNotes\/?p=312"},"modified":"2020-04-02T10:09:07","modified_gmt":"2020-04-02T15:09:07","slug":"habits-of-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/crosslabyrinth.com\/JourneyNotes\/?p=312","title":{"rendered":"Habits of Life"},"content":{"rendered":"\t<audio id=\"wp_mep_1\" src=\"http:\/\/crosslabyrinth.com\/m4a\/Journey%20Notes%2017%20Habits%20of%20Life%20Accomp.m4a\"     controls=\"controls\" preload=\"none\"  >\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t<\/audio>\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\">\r\njQuery(document).ready(function($) {\r\n\t$('#wp_mep_1').mediaelementplayer({\r\n\t\tm:1\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t,features: ['playpause','current','progress','duration','volume','tracks','fullscreen']\r\n\t\t,audioWidth:,audioHeight:\r\n\t});\r\n});\r\n<\/script>\r\n\n<p>People are creatures of habit.\u00a0 For better or for worse, much of what we do falls into patterns and routines that repeat over and over again.\u00a0 And the more we repeat them, the harder they are to stop.\u00a0 Samuel Johnson, the famous 18th century British author, said that the chains of habit are generally too small to be felt until they are too strong to be broken.\u00a0 How true!<\/p>\n<p>Many of our habits are easily observed.\u00a0 We wake up and go to sleep at regular hours.\u00a0 We eat.\u00a0 We work.\u00a0 We play.\u00a0 It is easy to forget, though, that just as many habits lie beneath the surface.\u00a0 The things we think and feel and believe fall into patterns, too.\u00a0 What kinds of habits do you have?\u00a0 Which do you nurture?<\/p>\n<p>Charles Tindley was an African American born a decade before the US Civil War began.\u00a0 Although he was a free man from birth, his father was a slave and the younger Tindley was hired out from a very early age to help support the family.\u00a0 He knew very well the hardships of life for slaves.\u00a0 Even so, he hungered for knowledge and adopted a habit of learning.\u00a0 &#8220;I made a rule to learn at least one new thing\u2014a thing I did not know the day before\u2014each day.&#8221;\u00a0 Self-taught, he learned to read not only English, but Hebrew and Greek as well.\u00a0 He had over 8,000 books in his personal library during his lifetime.\u00a0 When the church where he had worked as a janitor granted him a license to preach, Tindley used it.\u00a0 He became known as &#8220;The Prince of Preachers.&#8221;\u00a0 Under his leadership the church grew from 130 members to more than 10,000.\u00a0 All of this from such humble beginnings, a love for the Lord, and a simple habit of learning.<\/p>\n<p>Tindley was also known for his hymns, including <em>Nothing Between<\/em>.\u00a0 Tindley knew about habits.\u00a0 The words of this hymn warn us against habits that come between us and our Lord.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Nothing between, like worldly pleasure;<br \/>\nhabits of life, though harmless they seem,<br \/>\nmust not my heart from him ever sever;<br \/>\nhe is my all, there&#8217;s nothing between.<\/p>\n<p>While you are on your pilgrim journey, watch your habits.\u00a0 The chains of bad habits enslave us.\u00a0 As Tindley&#8217;s life showed, though, good habits free us to bear good fruit for our Lord.\u00a0 Let your habits of life be habits of Life in Christ.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Nothing Between\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZQ4JH9L65Ws?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
